Snow expected to impact morning commute in parts of southern Ontario

A brief but intense round of snowfall is expected to move through parts of southern Ontario this morning, potentially causing hazardous travel conditions during the commute.

Southern Ontario Braces for Quick-Moving Snowfall

Forecasters say local snowfall amounts of 4 to 8 centimetres are possible, but the primary concern is the speed at which the snow will fall. Periods of heavy snow and localized blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility on roads and highways, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada.

The snow is expected to begin this morning and taper off by early afternoon, though areas closer to the St. Lawrence River may experience lingering effects for a longer duration.

Environment Canada warns that the storm’s short duration could still create hazardous travel conditions, as visibility may suddenly drop and roads become slippery.

The system is expected to impact Pickering, Oshawa and southern Durham Region, as well as Cobourg, Newmarket, Georgina, northern York Region, Colborne, western Northumberland County, and Barrie, Collingwood and Hillsdale.

Drivers are advised to slow down, leave extra space between vehicles and allow for additional travel time as conditions can change rapidly.
