Ownership Transition and the Role of the Antwerp Consortium

Royal Antwerp FC will transition to new ownership as an investment group led by Wouter Vandenhaute and club legend Toby Alderweireld reaches a principal agreement to acquire the shares of Paul Gheysens. The deal ends Gheysens’ 11-year tenure, during which the club secured a historic league title and cup victory.

Ownership Transition and the Role of the Antwerp Consortium

An investment group featuring former Anderlecht chairman Wouter Vandenhaute and current Antwerp player Toby Alderweireld has secured a principal agreement to acquire Gheysens’ full package of shares. The consortium emphasizes a desire for local stability, stating, Het Antwerpse consortium is ontstaan vanuit een gedeelde overtuiging: Royal Antwerp FC verdient een lokaal verankerd aandeelhouderschap dat de club op lange termijn verder wil uitbouwen (The Antwerp consortium was born from a shared conviction: Royal Antwerp FC deserves a locally anchored ownership that wants to further build the club in the long term).

While Vandenhaute is set to become the primary shareholder, he will not occupy the role of chairman. Instead, that position will be filled by Jacques Vandermeiren, the former port authority executive who already held a seat on the club’s board. CEO Sven Jaecques is expected to remain in his current role, providing a degree of continuity for the staff and operations at the Bosuil stadium.

Financial Pressures and the End of the Gheysens Era

The sale comes at a time of mounting financial strain for the outgoing owner. To address immediate cash flow issues, Gheysens had secured a loan from the leverage fund Fasanara.

The urgency of the deal was underscored by the terms of that loan; reports indicate that repayment was required two weeks ago, with the threat of the fund seizing partial control of the club if the deadline were missed. Although Gheysens initially secured an extension, the need for a long-term solution led to the negotiations with the Vandenhaute-led group. Despite these final-year financial difficulties, the new owners expressed bijzondere waardering (special appreciation) for the family’s contributions, noting that the investments made during the Gheysens era laid the groundwork for the club’s recent resurgence.

Legacy of the 2023 Double and Future Objectives

“De investeringen in de club, de Bosuil en de sportieve werking legden de basis voor een landstitel, bekerwinst, Europees voetbal en een hernieuwde trots bij de Antwerp-supporters.”

Despite these achievements, the club has faced challenges recently, finishing in the right column of the standings last season. The new owners have articulated a clear, if broad, set of goals: they aim to develop the club to be financieel gezond, sportief ambitieus en duurzaam (financially healthy, sportingly ambitious, and sustainable). However, the specific plans for handling the remaining millions in debt—which must be either repaid or refinanced in the coming years—remain unclear. The consortium has committed to building on the existing foundation, noting, Op dat sterke fundament willen we met respect verder bouwen (We want to continue building on that strong foundation with respect).
