Social Worker Arrested in Contraband Smuggling Case

According to court papers, Le Roux is stationed at Voorberg Correctional Centre. During a search upon entering the facility, authorities discovered the prohibited items in her possession.

The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) confirmed the arrest and stated that the matter has been reported to the South African Police Service (SAPS). Internal disciplinary processes will also be initiated, according to DCS spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo.

“The Department can further confirm that internal disciplinary processes will be instituted in line with applicable prescripts,” Nxumalo reported. “DCS maintains a zero-tolerance stance on the smuggling of contraband within correctional facilities. The detection and apprehension of the official demonstrates the effectiveness of existing security measures, including the searching of both inmates and officials.”

SAPS spokesperson Thembakazi Mpendukana confirmed the arrest, stating that Le Roux was arrested for attempting to bring cellphones and drugs into the correctional centre.

The suspect appeared in court on February 23 and remains in custody. The case has been postponed to March 2, 2026, at Porterville Magistrate’s Court.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) party criticized the incident, stating it highlights a collapse within the correctional system. They noted the inherent trust placed in social workers and the potential for corruption given their level of access.

“A social worker in Correctional Services is supposed to be at the forefront of rehabilitation, guiding offenders away from criminal networks and helping to break the cycle of crime,” the DA said in a statement. “Instead, the very official entrusted with this responsibility is alleged to have enabled the very criminal activity she was meant to prevent.”

The DA is calling for independent lifestyle audits of Correctional Services officials, particularly those in trusted positions, to identify potential corruption and unexplained wealth.
