Beginning in January 2028, Sony will discontinue physical game disc production for all new PlayStation titles. The move, which has sparked significant consumer backlash and industry debate, aligns the company with a long-term shift toward digital-only distribution as sales continue to decline across the gaming market.
The Shift to Digital-Only Releases
The transition was detailed in a recent post on the official PlayStation Blog. According to Sid Shuman, Senior Director of Content Communications at Sony Interactive Entertainment, the decision is a natural direction
for the brand, intended to align with shifting consumer preferences. Starting in January 2028, new games will be released exclusively on the PlayStation Store or as digital download codes sold at retail.
Industry data suggests this transition was inevitable. Mat Piscatella, chief video game industry analyst at Circana, noted that spending on physical games reached an all-time low in 2025. Current hardware sales reflect this trend: 27 percent of all PS5 hardware and 52 percent of all Xbox Series hardware sold in the U.S. to date are Digital Only
editions. While Nintendo fans are still more likely to buy physical game cards, other console ecosystems have seen double-digit percentage declines in physical media sales over recent years.
Disgaea Creator Sohei Niikawa’s Critique
The announcement has drawn pointed criticism from developers who view physical media as essential to the relationship between creators and fans. During an interview at Anime Expo 2026, Disgaea creator Sohei Niikawa expressed deep skepticism about the move, arguing that physical games serve as meaningful keepsakes that digital downloads cannot replicate.

“If they’re going to go as far as eliminating physical packages, they may as well eliminate the hardware, too. A television would be enough. Why would you need the console? If you’re going to get rid of physical games, you may as well go all the way.”
Sohei Niikawa, creator of the Disgaea series
Niikawa argued that Sony’s leadership may not fully grasp the emotional value fans place on physical items—such as bringing a game to a convention to be signed by its developers. He suggested that by removing the tactile nature of gaming, the console itself loses much of its purpose.
Industry Perspectives and Financial Realities
While fans have voiced concerns regarding game ownership and preservation, industry executives see the move as a logical financial step. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot recently told investors that the transition could lead to more accessible, cheaper hardware by removing the cost of optical disc drives. Guillemot noted that a similar shift on PC helped grow the overall market, concluding that the move will not disturb too much the industry.
Financially, the logic is clear.
Market Impact and Consumer Rights
Despite an online petition that has gathered over 336,000 signatures, analysts believe Sony is unlikely to reverse course.
The transition creates significant questions regarding long-term access. Because digital purchases are licenses rather than ownership of a physical good, they can be revoked.
