Authorities in Spain and France are battling severe wildfires that have forced tens of thousands of evacuations. In Spain, the government declared a national state of emergency in Madrid and Ávila as fires merged, while in France, a massive blaze near the Arcachon Basin destroyed over 50 homes.
National Emergency Declared in Spain
The Spanish government has officially declared a state of emergency of national interest in the Madrid region and the province of Ávila. This legal status places the crisis under the direct authority of the Minister of the Interior, who is now tasked with coordinating the response and managing state, regional, and local resources. According to the Ministry of the Interior, this shift was necessary due to the simultaneous nature of the fires, unfavorable weather conditions, and the complexity of ongoing civil protection operations.
Operational control has been handed to the chief of the Military Emergency Unit (UME). Officials report that fires in the Madrid region have already consumed thousands of hectares, with the regional environmental advisor, Carlos Novillo, describing the situation as at its peak and impossible to extinguish as of Friday evening.
Evacuations and Property Destruction in Gironde
In France, the situation in the Gironde department escalated sharply overnight. Sophie Brocas, the prefect of Gironde, confirmed that a massive wildfire—described as an XXL fire—suddenly breached defensive lines held by firefighters. The surge occurred around 1:00 a.m. local time, prompting immediate evacuation orders for the Le Porge and Lège-Cap-Ferret areas. At midnight, this XXL fire amplified suddenly, and my priority is to defend life and the population, Brocas stated, noting that 53 homes and a camping site were destroyed in the path of the flames.
The scale of the disaster has drawn comparisons to the 2022 fire season. Marc Vermeulen, head of the Gironde departmental fire and rescue service, warned that current conditions are worse than those encountered four years ago. Our forest is in a much more important state of drought than in 2022, Vermeulen said. While 500 firefighters are currently engaged in containment efforts, 27 personnel have required medical attention, including six who were hospitalized due to smoke inhalation or injury.
Climate Factors and International Coordination
Both nations are grappling with the effects of extreme weather, which experts associate with climate change. In Spain, high temperatures and strong winds—with gusts reaching 50 kilometers per hour—have hampered efforts to stop the spread of flames. The Spanish government has activated the European Union’s Civil Protection Mechanism, with the European Commission preparing to deploy four Canadair aircraft from Greece and Italy to assist in the firefighting efforts by Saturday.
The origin of the fires remains under investigation. In the Spanish locality of Burgohondo, the Civil Guard has detained one person and is investigating another, alleging that the use of heavy machinery in a prohibited area sparked the blaze. Meanwhile, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is scheduled to visit the emergency coordination center in the municipality of Cenicientos on Saturday to assess the response to the ongoing crisis.
