A six-year-old girl was the sole survivor from her family in Sunday’s high-speed rail disaster in southern Spain, which claimed the lives of 42 people, including her parents, brother, and cousin. The girl sustained only a minor head wound in the collision near Adamuz in the Córdoba province of Andalucía.

The child, whose name has not been released, was found walking along the tracks after the two trains collided. She and her family had been traveling home to Aljaraque, near Huelva, after a trip to Madrid to see the Lion King musical and visit the Bernabéu stadium.

The outing was a celebration of the Epiphany, a traditional Spanish holiday when children receive Christmas presents. José Carlos Hernández Cansino, the mayor of Punta Umbría, described the girl’s survival as “a miracle” after learning that four members of the same family were among the dead.

Adrián Cano, the mayor of Aljaraque, stated the town was “broken with grief and almost without words of comfort.” The girl was initially cared for by a police officer before being reunited with her grandmother in Córdoba, according to authorities.

Other families have begun to share their stories following the crash, Spain’s worst rail accident in over a decade. Alberto García told Antena 3 TV channel that his pregnant daughter, five months along, was in intensive care with serious injuries and placed under sedation while doctors monitor the baby’s heartbeat.

Firefighters rescued the woman unconscious from the wreckage after passengers broke windows to escape. Her sister, Ana, who was traveling with her and their dog, Boro, sustained lighter injuries. Boro remains missing, and Ana expressed hope of finding the dog, believing her sister may have been injured while trying to protect it.

Spain began three days of national mourning on Monday to honor the victims. The high-speed train was traveling from Málaga to Madrid when it derailed, crossing onto another track and colliding with an oncoming train from Madrid to Huelva.
