A Singapore-based social media influencer has apologized after facing criticism for a pun referencing the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel. Novita Lam, who has a combined following of over 525,000 across Instagram and TikTok, shared the post while documenting a recent jog.
Influencer’s Post Draws Backlash
The post, originally shared via an Instagram Story and TikTok video, showed Lam jogging in the Marina Bay area. Alongside details of her run, she included the caption “Iran this, Israel that. IRAN 10km and the pain ISREAL” – a play on words intended to emphasize the difficulty of her exercise.
The posts quickly drew criticism, with many users deeming the timing insensitive given the escalating conflict in the Middle East. Screenshots of the post circulated online, and commenters on TikTok criticized Lam’s “lack of self-awareness.” Some users on Reddit also pointed out that Singaporeans may be currently affected by the conflict, making the pun particularly inappropriate.
Lam has since removed the original posts and issued an apology on her Instagram story, describing the post as “insensitive and hurtful.” She stated she removed the post as soon as she realized her mistake and promised to be “more mindful moving forward.”
