Documents related to Lord Mandelson’s appointment as US ambassador are being released, though they represent an incomplete picture of the events. The released materials cover the consideration and vetting process for the position, but documents from his time in Washington will be published at a later date.

Documents Released in Mandelson Appointment Inquiry

A word of caution regarding the released documents: they will not provide a complete account of the saga surrounding Lord Mandelson’s appointment and actions, or those of the prime minister. The current release includes messages, emails, and other documents from when Peter Mandelson was being considered for the post and offered it, including those produced during his vetting process.

However, documents from after he was in Washington are not included in this release and will be made public later. The process of collecting and preparing the documents is extensive, and a parliamentary committee is currently reviewing them to determine what can be redacted or withheld for reasons of government or diplomatic security.

The Metropolitan Police have also requested that certain documents not be published as a precaution while they conduct their own investigation. This includes correspondence between Downing Street and Lord Mandelson during his vetting, along with follow-up questions and his responses, which will not be released today. These documents will be made public once the police give their approval.

These documents may be crucial in evaluating the actions of those involved. Determining who knew what, and when, is a key aspect of the inquiry.

The documents have just been released and are currently being reviewed.
