Taoiseach to visit south east to assess storm damage

Taoiseach Micheál Martin is traveling to the southeast of Ireland to assess damage caused by Storm Chandra, following a week of widespread flooding across the country.

Mr. Martin is expected to meet with individuals affected by the storm and subsequent floods in Kilkenny, Carlow, and Wexford.

The visit follows a week of significant flooding that has caused substantial damage to homes and businesses in the worst-hit areas.

The Government has announced plans to increase emergency funding limits for small groups and businesses from €20,000 to €100,000. These plans will be finalized during a Cabinet meeting tomorrow.

Public discussion has focused on the current regional and county Yellow, Orange, and Red weather warning system operated by Met Éireann, with consideration being given to the inclusion of a localized element during severe storms and floods.

This potential change will be discussed at a meeting tomorrow involving the Taoiseach, Tánaiste Simon Harris, and relevant ministers. It is also likely to be raised during the Taoiseach’s visit today.

Further Flooding Risk

The National Emergency Coordination Group has warned of potential further flooding in the east and southeast, as above-average rainfall is forecast for the coming week.

A Status Yellow rain warning will be in effect for counties Cork, Waterford, Carlow, Kilkenny, and Wexford from 6pm this evening.

Another Status Yellow rain warning for Wicklow, Dublin, and Louth will begin at 3am tomorrow as rain moves northward along the east coast.

Rain falling on already saturated ground and swollen rivers is expected to exacerbate flooding conditions. Flooding may also occur in counties such as Cavan and Monaghan, and across the eastern half of the country.

Emergency services and local authorities are on alert. The public is advised to stay informed about warnings from Met Éireann and local authorities, and to contact 999 or 112 for urgent assistance.
