A man was killed and two others wounded in a shooting Tuesday evening in Delft, South Africa, adding to a recent surge of taxi-related violence in the area. The incident occurred at an office of a taxi association on Main Road, police said.
Delft Taxi Violence Investigation
Police confirmed a murder and two attempted murder cases are under investigation following the 6:40 p.m. shooting. A 36-year-old man died at the scene, while two others, aged 30 and 64, were transported to a medical facility for treatment.
According to police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg, officers found the victims with gunshot wounds. The suspects fled and remain at large. Authorities believe the motive for the attack is taxi-related.
The shooting follows the death of a 44-year-old taxi driver affiliated with the Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association (Codeta) on Friday evening. He was shot on the corner of Delft Main Road and Tamarisk Street.
Taxi associations have expressed confusion over the cause of the violence, stating they are unaware of any specific disputes. Mandla Hermanus, Western Cape chairperson of the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco), said the shootings appear random.
“We do not know from which organisation these three men who were shot belong to, or even their identities,” Hermanus stated. “The shootings seem to be just across the whole township… it seems like random shootings, where it does not matter what association one belongs to, the people just get killed.”
Santaco plans to work with law enforcement and other associations operating in Delft to investigate the cause of the shootings and find a resolution.
