When Ted Lasso concludes its three-year hiatus on August 5, 2026, viewers will find the titular coach in a new environment. After the third season finale saw the character return to the United States to be with his son, the upcoming fourth season tracks his return to Richmond to manage a second-division women’s football team. This creative direction, which shifts the show’s focus from the men’s squad to an all-female roster, was the result of extensive brainstorming sessions held at the Ojai Valley Inn in early 2024.

Co-creator Brendan Hunt described the development process as checking the viability of the soil to see if there was more story to tell. For the production, the change represents more than a simple spinoff; it is, according to cast member and writer Brett Goldstein, adding a room to the bar rather than starting a new series.

Difficult Decisions and Cast Departures

The decision to shift the narrative focus meant that many of the original AFC Richmond players would not return as series regulars. Jason Sudeikis personally handled the news, contacting the actors involved to explain the change. Because I didn’t want them to hear it on the internet, Sudeikis told The Hollywood Reporter. While the men’s locker room roster has been overhauled, several core cast members are set to reprise their roles, including Hannah Waddingham, Juno Temple, Jeremy Swift, and Brett Goldstein.

Sudeikis and the Future of the Franchise

The path to a fourth season was far from certain. Sudeikis, who served as the show’s primary creative force, initially resisted calls to continue the series, stating that the original story was complete. I wasn’t going to have Ted uproot their life to justify the money truck, Sudeikis explained regarding offers that reportedly exceeded $1 million per episode. However, he eventually changed his perspective after hearing from fans who told him the show had saved them, a sentiment he echoed, noting, It saved me, too.

Looking beyond the August 2026 premiere, the production team is already planning for the long term. Sudeikis has expressed interest in a narrative arc that could extend through a fifth and sixth season. While Apple TV+ has not yet officially commissioned a fifth season, Sudeikis says that the aim is to get all of the writers back in late August to work on ideas for a following season.

Production Challenges and Behind-the-Scenes Dynamics

The road to the fourth season was marked by logistical hurdles, including reported schedule delays and intense coordination between the creative team and Apple. The show also navigated rumors regarding the departure of former showrunner Bill Lawrence, who exited after the second season. Sudeikis denied reports of a feud, noting that his preference would have been to land the plane with the same people we took off with.

Jack Burditt, known for his work on 30 Rock and Modern Family, has stepped in as showrunner for the fourth season.
