UK newspapers are focusing on Iran’s attacks on British troops stationed in Iraq, alongside accusations of Russian support for Tehran’s military actions and the resulting impact on global oil prices.

Iran Attacks on British Troops

The front pages of Friday’s UK newspapers lead with reports of Iran’s drone strikes on British bases in Baghdad and Erbil. The Sun’s front page reads “Brit base blitzed by Iran,” while the Daily Mirror states “Under fire.” The Independent reports “Iran targets our troops,” noting that no British personnel were injured in the attacks.

Strait of Hormuz and Oil Prices

The Independent also reports that the UK government is “set sights on vital Strait of Hormuz,” with Iran’s attempts to block the shipping lane “severely disrupt[ing] the supply line of crude oil.” This disruption has raised concerns about global energy prices, with the cost of heating oil in Britain more than doubling in the past week.

Russian Involvement Allegations

Several papers are reporting on accusations that Russia is assisting Iran’s military tactics. The Daily Telegraph’s headline reads, “Russia behind attack on UK troops.” Defence Secretary John Heley’s quote, “Hidden hand of Putin,” features on the front pages of the Times and the Guardian.

The Guardian reports that Iranian drone pilots are “using methods learned on Ukraine battlefield,” and that Russian President Vladimir Putin “benefits from oil price rises to fund war with Kyiv.”

The Financial Times estimates that Russia is receiving a $150 million (£112.3m) daily “oil windfall,” declaring Moscow “the biggest winner from the conflict in the Middle East.”
