Grace Tame has criticized Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and his government’s stance on the war in the Middle East, describing the current political climate as “an Orwellian nightmare.” The advocate for sexual abuse survivors and human rights activist accused Albanese of prioritizing foreign powers over Australian interests.
Critique of Albanese’s Foreign Policy
In an essay published Friday, Tame labeled Albanese a “coward” and a “turncoat” for refusing to condemn U.S.-Israel strikes on Iran. She argued that the government quickly moved to support the war initiated by the U.S. and Israel without congressional approval and in violation of international law.
Tame’s rebuke of the prime minister is her most comprehensive since he described her as “difficult” at a News Corp event. He later clarified that he meant to convey she had a “difficult life.”
“Difficult” Label and Political Propaganda
Tame stated she has encountered a “well-oiled, well funded political propaganda machine” in recent months. She believes Albanese found her “difficult” because she has been outspoken about Australia’s alliance with the U.S. and Israel.
“Anthony Albanese has let us all down by capitulating to foreign powers who crave hegemony, profit from endless chaos, and whose interests conflict with our own,” she said.
She contrasted Albanese’s past advocacy for Palestine and criticism of Australia’s involvement in the Iraq war with his current position, alleging Australia cannot afford to sever its military ties with the U.S. and Israel as a “relatively defenceless Pacific middle power.”
“Globalise the Intifada” and Backlash
Tame has faced criticism following her participation in a pro-Palestine rally last month, where she led chants of “globalise the intifada.” She claimed the media and political leaders used her as a “scapegoat” to distract from footage of police brutality at the event, framing her as antisemitic and a terrorist sympathizer.
She argued there is a “disconnect” between the values of everyday voters and the desires of influential powerbrokers, leading to the Australian government and some media outlets being out of step with the public.
Impact on Speaking Engagements
Tame reported losing three speaking engagements on child safety due to an “ongoing media campaign.”
Albanese was approached for comment.
The federal government has stated its support for action to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon and threatening international peace and security.
