WEST SUMBAWA, Indonesia — Nearly 600 children participated in basketball clinics in Taliwang, West Sumbawa, as part of the Basketball For Good program, bringing the initiative to its fourth location in Indonesia.

Basketball For Good Expands Reach in Indonesia

Following successful programs in Timika, Mataram, and Kulon Progo, Basketball For Good arrived in West Sumbawa from November 5 to 7. The event involved approximately 600 children, aged 10 to 12, from 20 schools and local clubs.

The activities were based on the Hoops for Health and Well-Being Playbook developed by the FIBA Foundation, aiming to raise awareness and combat non-communicable diseases in Pacific Island regions through basketball.

Collaborative Effort

The program was organized by FIBA Indonesia, in cooperation with PERBASI West Sumbawa (West Sumbawa Regency Basketball Association), with support from Amman Mineral and the West Sumbawa Government Administration. This collaboration facilitated a well-organized event for the local community, demonstrating a commitment to grassroots sports development.

Throughout the three-day event, sessions focused on values such as cooperation, responsibility, fair play, and healthy habits. Participants included students and teachers from 20 West Sumbawan schools, as well as members from local basketball clubs including Barema Basketball Academy, Gipsy Academy, Monster Jereweh Basketball Club and Maluk Basketball Club.

Participation was nearly equal between genders. To date, nearly 1200 students and almost 100 teachers and coaches have been directly impacted by Basketball For Good in Indonesia.

Underserved regions

The success in West Sumbawa highlights the potential of partnerships between the private sector and sports institutions to increase access to sports and promote positive behavioral changes, particularly in areas with limited structured sports opportunities.

“This initiative has been part of our discussions for the past three years, and we are proud to see it come to life this year. It began with the West Sumbawa Basketball League and reflects our development strategy, particularly our focus on nurturing young athletes,” said Aji Suryanto, Senior Manager Social Impact, Amman Mineral Nusa Tenggara.

“Through this program, we hope students from West Sumbawa can grow into competitive players and eventually represent the region and Indonesia at the national level,” Suryanto added.

Basketball For Good programs in 2025 will primarily target the eastern part of Indonesia, while 2026 will focus on the islands of Sulawesi and Kalimantan. The first session planned for 2026 will be held in Ambon in January.

The FIBA Foundation is the social and legacy arm of FIBA, dedicated to promoting basketball’s values and cultural heritage and leveraging the sport to empower, educate, and inspire youth worldwide.
