Japanese authorities announced on Friday that the death toll from the devastating earthquake that struck the center of the archipelago on New Year’s Day had risen to 92 dead and 242 missing.

A previous provisional official toll reported that 84 people were killed and 180 people were missing in this earthquake, which reached a magnitude of 7.5 and caused widespread destruction, landslides, a large fire, and tsunami waves more than a meter high.

With every passing minute, the hope of finding more survivors diminishes, and the death toll is likely to rise further because hundreds of buildings were destroyed in the disaster, especially due to a huge fire that broke out in the city of Wajima, while some villages remain isolated.

The rains increased the complexity of the search operation carried out by thousands of members of the Self-Defense Forces, firefighters and police who arrived from all over Japan, and these conditions exacerbated the difficulty of delivering food and aid to the afflicted.

Japan is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, and is one of the countries in the world frequently struck by earthquakes.
