On Tuesday, the Minister of Interior, Abdul Amir al-Shammari, and Health Minister, Saleh Mahdi al-Hasnawi, opened two forced asylums for drug addicts and users on the Rusafa side of Baghdad.

The Ministry of Interior said in a statement received by the (INA): “The Minister of Interior, Abdul Amir al-Shammari, and the Minister of Health, Saleh Mahdi al-Hasnawi, opened, today, two forced clinics affiliated with the General Directorate for Combating Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances on the Rusafa side,” indicating that “the first clinic is in the Al-Rashad area.” The second is in the municipalities area, which specializes in treating victims of drug poisoning.”

Al-Shammari stressed during the opening that “there is a qualitative shift in the operations carried out by the General Directorate of Narcotics Control,” pointing out that “other forced asylums will be opened in a number of governorates, and drug addicts who are arrested will be kept in them, instead of putting them in prisons or detention centers.” “In which drug traffickers are placed as victims.”


He stressed that “these clinics were rehabilitated in cooperation with the Ministry of Health,” noting that “the government supports the efforts of the Ministry of Interior in combating the drug scourge.”
