Veteran broadcaster Tichafa Augustine Matambanadzo, better known as Tich Mataz, appeared in a Harare court on Tuesday facing charges of culpable homicide following a fatal pedestrian accident in 2024.
- Charge: Culpable homicide
- Incident Date: July 27, 2024
- Trial Date: Remanded to May 19
Matambanadzo, 56, appeared before Magistrate Tapiwa Kuhudzai. He was not asked to plead during the appearance, and the matter was remanded to May 19 for the commencement of the trial.
Details of the Collision
Prosecutor Charlotte Gomani alleged that on July 27, 2024, Matambanadzo was driving a Toyota Hilux westbound along Samora Machel Avenue with three passengers on board.
The vehicle struck 44-year-old pedestrian Daniel Uchena near Odzi Flats in Eastlea. Uchena was walking southward along the road when he was hit by the vehicle’s front right fender.
Uchena sustained multiple internal injuries and was transported to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, where he was certified dead on admission.
Allegations of Negligence
The National Prosecuting Authority alleges that Tichafa Augustine Matambanadzo acted negligently by failing to keep a proper lookout and failing to take reasonable evasive action when the collision became imminent.
Furthermore, prosecutors claim that Matambanadzo was driving at an excessive speed. The collision resulted in a shattered windscreen and damage to the front right bumper of the Toyota Hilux.
