A Toronto Police Service officer has been charged with manslaughter following a fatal shooting in Niagara Falls, Ontario, last year.
Const. Andrew Lawson was charged by Special Investigations Unit (SIU) director Joseph Martino. Lawson was arrested Wednesday at SIU headquarters and has since been released on an undertaking with conditions.
Details of the Police Officer Charged with Manslaughter
The incident occurred on July 30, 2025, near the Ramada by Wyndham hotel. Officers from multiple services, including the Ontario Provincial Police’s Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement Unit, were attempting to arrest a 40-year-old man subject to an outstanding Canada-wide parole revocation warrant.
Following an interaction between the officers and the man, Lawson discharged his firearm, striking the man. The victim was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
At the time of the incident, the SIU stated that another officer was also transported to a hospital with a serious injury.
A constable by the same name received a Governor General exemplary service medal in 2016, recognizing 20 years of service.
The SIU is the agency responsible for investigating police interactions with the public that involve death, serious injury, or sexual assault.
