A city council member and environmental advocate has died, prompting tributes from across the political spectrum. The council member was a long-time campaigner for clean air and equality within the community.
Environmental Champion and City Leader
The council member was a passionate campaigner on environmental issues, founding the Clean Air Justice Network and advocating for reduced pollution levels throughout the city. He frequently addressed public concerns regarding the implementation of the Clean Air Zone in 2021.
Councillor Saima Ahmed shared on Facebook that the council member was consistently willing to offer help and support to others. She noted his deep belief in equality and his dedication to speaking up for the community and colleagues, regardless of political affiliation.
“His loss is felt deeply – the community, his friends and all of us who had the honour of knowing him,” Ahmed wrote. “We have lost a leader, a voice of integrity and a kind-hearted friend.”
He served on the Sustainability and Transport, and Neighbourhoods scrutiny committees. More recently, he participated in the Safety Advisory Group, which faced criticism for its decision to prohibit Maccabi Tel Aviv fans from attending an event at Villa Park.
Throughout his career, he held key cabinet positions including transport, equalities and social justice. He stepped down from his role as equalities chief in 2017 following criticism from the government integration tsar.
Conservative group leader Robert Alden acknowledged their differing political views but emphasized the council member’s deep care for his local community. “It’s awful to hear this news and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this horrendous time,” Alden said.
