Stalled Peace Negotiations in Islamabad
A US delegation led by Vice President JD Vance is expected to depart soon for Islamabad. The city previously hosted a first round of talks earlier this month that failed to produce a deal.
Despite expectations that negotiations would begin Monday, Iranian state TV reported Tuesday that no delegation from Iran has departed for Pakistan, dismissing contrary reports.
Escalating Trade Route Tensions
Tensions have escalated since the previous round of marathon talks. Trump has announced a blockade of Iranian ports, while Tehran has again closed the Strait of Hormuz.
Both nations have traded accusations of ceasefire breaches. The US leader claimed Iran fired on ships in the trade route, while Tehran cited the US blockade and the seizure of a ship as violations.
Despite the diplomatic deadlock, Trump expressed confidence in his ability to secure a favorable agreement. Speaking to CNBC on Tuesday, he stated, “We’re going to end up with a great deal. I think they have no choice… We’re in a very, very strong negotiating position.”
