One of the conjoined twins who were successfully separated in a complex surgery at Mankweng Hospital in Limpopo has died. The twins, who were joined at the head, underwent the historic procedure earlier this month.
Death of Conjoined Twin Following Separation Surgery
Health Minister Joe Phaahla visited Mankweng Hospital following the death, according to reports. He stated that doctors “did their best” to save both twins.
The surgery, which lasted over 20 hours, involved a team of medical professionals. The twins were born joined at the head and the separation was considered a high-risk procedure.
Dr. Phophi Ramathuba expressed uncertainty about what could have happened, stating, “We don’t know what could have happened.”
The surviving twin is reportedly still under medical care at Mankweng Hospital. The circumstances surrounding the death are being closely monitored by medical staff.
Minister Motsoaledi also visited the hospital after the death of one of the twins.
