Scientists have identified the earliest known evidence of spider fangs in a 518-million-year-old fossil named Urokodia, discovered in southern China’s Chengjiang fossil site. Using X-ray analysis, researchers revealed mummified soft anatomy showcasing pincer-like chelicerae, offering a crucial window into the ancient marine evolution of modern arachnids and scorpions.
When people think of the infamous black widow spider or even the radioactive arachnid from comic books, the bite is what captures the imagination. Now, that chilling reputation has been traced back over half a billion years. According to researchers at the University of Leicester and Yunnan University, the evolutionary origins of the powerful fangs that make spiders formidable hunters are visible in a tiny, ancient fossil called Urokodia, detailed in a new study published in the journal Nature.
Unlocking the Soft Anatomy of Urokodia at the Chengjiang Fossil Site
Recovered from the famous Chengjiang fossil site in Yunnan province, southern China, Urokodia measures just two to three centimeters, or about 0.8 to 1.2 inches, long. The findings were published on the 42nd anniversary of the site’s discovery. At first glance, the creature bears little resemblance to the modern spiders and scorpions that count as its descendants. It features large eyes protruding on stalks from the front, a segmented skeleton, and jointed limbs strung along the underside of a slender body.
To peer beneath the stone, a team of scientists in China and the UK used advanced X-ray tomography analysis. This non-destructive probing revealed that much of the fossil’s soft anatomy remained mummified after hundreds of millions of years entombed in the rock. Crucially, the scans exposed two pincer-like limbs emerging directly behind the eyes—identifying them as the earliest known precursors to chelicerae, the specialized mouthparts modern arachnids use to stab prey.
From Ancient Seas to Modern Predators
Chelicerae define a vast group of invertebrates known as chelicerates, which includes more than 100,000 described species spanning spiders, scorpions, and ticks. While modern representatives are well-known terrestrial hunters, Urokodia swam in an ancient ocean. X-ray analysis also showed features on Urokodia’s legs that acted as book gills for breathing underwater, a respiratory structure shared by modern aquatic chelicerates like the horseshoe crab.
Professor Yu Liu of Yunnan University, who also serves as a visiting professor at the University of Leicester and led the study, described the moment of discovery. We were using X-ray tomography analysis of these fossils to reveal their soft anatomy buried in the rocks for hundreds of millions of years, when suddenly we noticed the pincer-like limbs at the front of the animal,
Liu said. We knew immediately that this was a very exciting fossil and indeed a distant ancestor of living chelicerates like scorpions and spiders.
Inside a 500-Million-Year-Old Ecosystem
According to co-author Professor Mark Williams from the University of Leicester School of Geography, Geology and the Environment, Urokodia was part of an ancient ecosystem of more than 200 different types of animals living in the seas more than 500 million years ago.
Williams noted that these spectacularly preserved specimens provide genuine insights into how complex life evolved at the very dawn of animal diversification.
While popular culture and horror films often portray spiders as a terrifying threat to humans, researchers emphasize that most living spiders are completely harmless to people, as their venom and fangs evolved specifically to subdue much smaller prey. The newly described fossil proves that the evolutionary lineage behind those specialized hunting tools stretches back over hundreds of millions of years into the ancient seas.
