The United States and Israel are weighing plans for what CBS News reported could be one of the harshest bombing campaigns to date against energy infrastructure in Iran. According to multiple sources cited by The Jerusalem Post, the potential wave of strikes could begin over the weekend and target critical sites such as power plants and refineries.
US and Israel Consider Harsh Bombing Campaign Against Iranian Energy Sites
Discussions regarding the operation included whether to conclude by the time financial markets open on Monday, driven by concerns over how the bombings might impact the United States and global economy, though a final end point had not been locked in. U.S. sources indicated that Israel has been notified and is coordinating with the United States, although U.S. President Donald Trump has not yet given final “go” orders for the strikes.
Cabinet Discussions and Conflicting Official Positions
The military strike plan was brought up during President Trump’s cabinet meeting at Camp David on Friday, according to sources briefed afterward. One source stated that some political aides within the White House strongly opposed the proposal.
While reporters were in the room during the Camp David retreat, President Trump told the press: We’ll be hitting them very hard. At some point, they’re going to say, ‘We just can’t take it anymore.’
When asked about reviving diplomacy, Trump remarked, I think we just want to win.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt provided a statement to CBS News asserting that the United States will win, and Iran will not have a nuclear weapon under his watch.
Despite reports of coordination, an Israeli official contested the claims, telling CBS News that Israel is unaware of a decision to restart full military operations, nor has been requested of Israel to join any military actions against Iran.
Pentagon Readiness and Broader Military Context
Chief Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell stated that the Department of War would not comment on specific targets prior to a final presidential decision. The Department of War is locked and loaded, ready to execute the President’s directives at a moment’s notice,
Parnell said in a statement.
A former U.S. military official noted that targeting energy infrastructure would aim to disrupt the Iranian military’s capacity to provide services and effectively govern. Earlier in the week, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with President Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, briefing Trump on three options for the war, including military strikes focused on land resupply routes, according to a senior Israeli official.
Additional military developments and threats have preceded the current energy infrastructure deliberations:
- The United States previously struck dual-use bridges utilized by both the military and civilians, according to a U.S. official.
- High-level U.S. discussions took place Friday regarding cutting electricity across Tehran, though no final decision had been reached by Friday afternoon.
