US Lawmakers Hold High-Level Talks at General Headquarters in Rawalpindi

A delegation of the United States House of Representatives met Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir at the General Headquarters (GHQ) on Monday to discuss regional security, bilateral defence cooperation and opportunities to strengthen economic ties. According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the US delegation included Representative Ryan Keith Zinke of Montana and Representative Michael James of Washington, also referred to as Congressmen Ryan Zinke of Montana and Michael Baumgartner of Washington—both of them members of the US House of Representatives. The two Republican lawmakers arrived in Pakistan last week.

The visit by the two Republican lawmakers comes amid renewed momentum in US-Pakistan engagement, with both sides stepping up high-level political, defence and economic contacts after President Donald Trump’s return to office last year. The discussions in Rawalpindi covered a broad range of diplomatic and strategic topics, with the ISPR stating that the officials discussed matters of mutual interest, regional security, bilateral defence cooperation and avenues for enhancing economic collaboration during their meeting with Field Marshal Munir.

Economic Reforms and Trade Expansion Take Center Stage

Beyond traditional defense matters, the meeting placed heavy emphasis on economic partnership and structural reforms. During the meeting, Field Marshal Asim Munir highlighted Pakistan’s economic potential, saying sustainable regional stability depends on economic development, expanded trade and stronger regional connectivity, stressing that sustainable regional stability was closely linked to economic growth, trade expansion and regional connectivity, according to the ISPR. He also briefed the delegation on Pakistan’s ongoing economic reforms, saying they are aimed at creating a business-friendly environment and attracting foreign investment.

According to the ISPR, discussions also covered opportunities for expanding bilateral trade, encouraging private-sector partnerships and deepening economic cooperation between the two countries. The ISPR stated, Recognising the professional backgrounds and insights of the delegation, both sides discussed potential opportunities for bilateral economic engagement, private sector partnerships and enhancing bilateral trade ties. The US lawmakers have expressed their commitment to promoting deeper economic, commercial and institutional linkages between the two countries, the military’s media wing added. The US lawmakers recognised Pakistan’s contribution to regional peace and stability and acknowledged the country’s economic potential, while thanking the Pakistan Army leadership for the warm welcome and reaffirming their commitment to strengthening economic, trade and institutional relations between Pakistan and the United States.

Assessing the Trajectory of US-Pakistan Diplomatic Ties

The congressional visit underscores a notable warming of relations between Washington and Islamabad over recent years. Ahead of their discussions at the General Headquarters, the two congressmen arrived in Pakistan last week and also visited Lahore, where they met Punjab Governor Sardar Saleem Haider Khan.

Reflecting on the state of bilateral relations during interviews with state-run Pakistan Television, Baumgartner said bilateral ties between the two countries were going to be stronger, while Zinke added that the relationship has never been better.

This renewed engagement builds on established rapport at the highest executive levels. Munir has developed close ties with the Trump administration in recent years. President Trump has publicly referred to Munir as his favourite field marshal, and Pakistan nominated the US President for the Nobel Peace Prize. During Munir’s visit to the US last year, he held a closed-door luncheon with Trump at the White House—the first known private meeting between a US President and a serving Pakistani army chief. Additionally, Pakistan has mediated between the US and Iran after hostilities broke out between the two countries earlier this year, continuing to engage both Washington and Tehran amid efforts to revive a ceasefire that collapsed following renewed strikes this month.
