Vilnius, Lithuania has opened a new indoor drone training facility to meet growing demand and prepare for the increasing role of drone technology in both civilian and military sectors. The facility, located in the Antakalnis neighbourhood near the municipal transport firm Vilniaus viešasis transportas, provides a year-round training environment unaffected by weather conditions.

“Drone enthusiasts clearly expressed the need for an enclosed space,” Vilnius Mayor Valdas Benkunskas told reporters, noting that comparable facilities in Latvia charge fees. Benkunskas emphasized the growing importance of drone technology in modern life and warfare, suggesting early exposure could benefit city services and businesses.

Rear Admiral Giedrius Premeneckas, Chief of the Defence Staff, highlighted the need for spaces to develop practical drone skills. He stated, “We are seeing a real drone revolution in defence,” and added that familiarity with drone systems would strengthen Lithuania’s security. Trained operators, he noted, “always find their place” within the Lithuanian Armed Forces.

The center prohibits the use of combat drones and requires all users to adhere to safety regulations. Access is granted through online registration, and on-site supervision is provided. Trainees can utilize their own drones or shared equipment, navigating obstacle courses and practicing maneuvers around a decommissioned trolleybus.

The project cost approximately EUR 70,000. An outdoor drone training area, spanning 0.90 hectares, has been operational in the Šeškinės hills since August 2024.
