A taxi driver in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) has been arrested as part of a heightened crackdown on traffic violations during the festive season. The arrest comes as authorities report a significant increase in enforcement efforts targeting drunk driving and reckless behavior on KZN roads.

KZN Traffic Enforcement Surge

Police in Newcastle arrested 100 motorists over the weekend as part of a broader traffic swoop. The crackdown is focused on addressing dangerous driving practices as holidaymakers begin their return journeys, according to reports.

The arrested taxi driver allegedly attempted to evade authorities. Sowetan reported the driver was described as “reckless” and was seen “skipping robots, jumps [sic] wall” before being apprehended.

Authorities are intensifying efforts to combat drunk driving throughout KZN. East Coast Radio reported that the increased enforcement is a direct response to concerns about road safety during the holiday period.
