Pakistan is experiencing a surge in WhatsApp hacking incidents, leading to fraud and blackmail targeting its citizens.

WhatsApp Hacking on the Rise in Pakistan

Recent reports indicate a significant increase in WhatsApp hacking cases across Pakistan. Cybersecurity experts are urging the public to be cautious, particularly regarding the sharing of one-time passwords (OTPs) and verification codes.

Hackers are reportedly initiating contact through calls from unknown numbers, often posing as representatives of courier companies. Victims are told they have a parcel awaiting delivery and are requested to share a verification code sent to their phone to facilitate the delivery process.

Once a victim shares their OTP, their WhatsApp account is immediately compromised, experts warn.

Compromised accounts are then used to contact friends and family, with scammers fabricating emergency situations and requesting urgent financial assistance. This tactic has resulted in substantial financial losses for numerous individuals.

Cybersecurity specialists note that elderly individuals and homemakers are especially vulnerable due to a lack of awareness regarding digital safety practices. In one instance, a victim reported that hackers used his account to message thousands of contacts, leading to multiple individuals transferring money to the scammers.

Authorities and experts emphasize the importance of never sharing OTPs or personal information with unknown callers, stressing that increased public awareness is crucial to combat the growing threat of cybercrime.
