World Athletics U20 Championships 2026 to Feature Tate Taylor and Quincy Wilson

U.S. Roster and Key Contenders

USA Track & Field has named a roster of 89 athletes to represent Team USATF. The men’s team is led by two current American U20 record holders, including incoming Texas Tech freshman Tate Taylor. Taylor, 18, will compete in the 100m, 200m, and 4x100m relay. He holds the American U20 record in the 100m with a time of 9.92, according to USA Track & Field.

Taylor enters the championships as a major favorite in the 200m after winning that event at the July 4 Prefontaine Classic in Eugene. During that race, he defeated Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo with a time of 19.75 seconds, which was achieved against a .9 meter-per-second headwind. This performance placed Taylor third on the all-time U20 list, surpassing Usain Bolt’s youth best of 19.93 seconds. Only Erriyon Knighton (19.49) and Gout Gout (19.67) have run faster as teenagers.

Also headlining the U.S. men’s team is 2024 Olympic champion Quincy Wilson, who will contest the 400m. Wilson previously became the youngest male Olympic track and field medalist at age 16 when he won gold in the 4x400m relay. He enters the event with a time of 44.84.

Global Competition and Field Depth

The sprint events are expected to be particularly competitive. In the men’s 100m, Jamaica’s Gary Card is a top contender and the only entrant to have broken the 10-second barrier, having set a national U20 record of 9.93 in June. The men’s 400m features four athletes who have run under 45 seconds, including U.S. athlete Jayden Deleon with a time of 44.52.

The women’s sprints feature Jamaica’s Shanoya Mikalia Douglas, who is the world leader in the 100m and 200m. Douglas holds a best of 10.98 in the 100m and 22.11 in the 200m. She will face challenge from American twins Mia and Mariah Maxwell, who finished first and second in both the 100m and 200m at the US U20 Championships. Mariah Maxwell has a personal best of 22.44, while Mia Maxwell has run 22.49.

Canada is sending a contingent that includes 19 sprinters and hurdlers, 10 middle-distance and distance runners, six jumpers, and four throwers. High school sprinter Wyatt Lee is entered in the 100m and 200m, while Zachary Jeggo enters the 400m after setting a Canadian national U20 record of 46.62 in February.

Additional Team Highlights and Schedule

The U.S. women’s team includes several high-ranking athletes:

• Claire Stegall: A rising Florida sophomore competing in the 1500m, who ranks No. 2 in American U20 history following a 4:04.59 run in June.
• Sophia Mazzoni: A rising Auburn sophomore competing in the javelin after recording a personal best of 56.51m in May.

Other notable U.S. entries include Le’Ezra Brown, a rising University of Georgia junior competing in the 110m hurdles after setting a pending American U20 record of 12.95.

The championships will stream live on Peacock from August 5-9. The schedule includes day and night sessions from Wednesday through Saturday, with a final session on Sunday starting at 11:45 a.m. ET.

Event Significance

USATF CEO Max Siegel described the championships as an invaluable opportunity for young athletes to compete against the world’s best, particularly as the United States prepares for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. The 2026 event celebrates 40 years of the World U20 Championships, surpassing the previous attendance record of 1,558 athletes set in Lima in 2024.
