The annual Perseid meteor shower is expected to reach its peak overnight between August 12 and August 13, 2026, with the potential for observers to see up to 100 shooting stars per hour, according to reports from the Los Angeles Times and MSN.
The event, which began on July 17, is caused by Earth passing through a debris field of sand-, pebble-, and dust-sized particles left by the comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle. Bruce Betts, chief scientist at the Planetary Society, noted that while Earth is hit by an estimated 100 tons of material every night, a meteor shower specifically occurs when the planet moves through such a comet debris field. These particles enter the atmosphere at speeds of approximately 59 kilometers per second, burning up to create the brief streaks of light known as meteors.
Optimal Viewing Conditions and Timing
Astronomers indicate that the 2026 peak is particularly favorable because it coincides almost exactly with a new moon. This lunar phase ensures the night sky will be at its darkest, significantly improving visibility for those away from city centers. This contrasts with the previous year’s peak, during which the moon was 84% full.
For those in the UK, astronomer Edward Bloomer of the Royal Observatory Greenwich suggests that while activity begins around 10 p.m., the ideal viewing window is between midnight and 4 a.m. because the constellation Perseus—from which the meteors appear to originate—is low on the horizon. Similarly, an astronomical organization in Cyprus stated that the best observation time there will be after midnight as the Earth’s rotation places the region in the direction of travel through the debris field.
Tips for Observers
Experts recommend finding locations with clear horizons and minimal light pollution to maximize the experience. Betts described light pollution as surface lights reflecting off particles in the atmosphere, which can obscure the view. Bloomer advised observers to give their eyes time to adjust to the darkness after arriving at a vantage point.

Because the shower is active from July 17 until August 24, observers have multiple opportunities to view the event if bad weather occurs on the peak night. Admission is $5 per carload, with camping options ranging from $10 for car camping to $30 for RVs.
- Los Angeles: Recommended viewing spots include the Mt. Wilson Observatory in the San Gabriel Mountains, which sits at an elevation of 5,650 feet, though its main gate typically closes at 5 p.m.
- Cyprus: Local observers are encouraged to seek locations away from artificial lighting to take advantage of the dark skies provided by the new moon.
Historical Context
The comet responsible for the shower, Swift-Tuttle, has been observed for thousands of years. Edward Bloomer stated that it is possible Chinese astronomers may have observed the object as far back as 69 BCE.
