Magnitude 6.8 Earthquake Strikes Japan’s Kumamoto Prefecture

The southern island of Kyushu is the third-largest of Japan’s four main islands and the second most populous. Approximately 300,000 people were instructed to move to evacuation shelters as tremors shook the region.

Damage and Missing Persons at Commercial and Industrial Sites

The disaster resulted in missing persons and structural failures across industrial and commercial facilities. According to a Disaster Management Division official, 19 people were reported missing across an Aeon shopping centre and a paper factory. Four people were rescued from the shopping mall and their lives were reported not to be in danger, but 10 people remained unaccounted for inside the complex. A witness reported seeing an explosion and smoke at the shopping mall after the earthquake, and the second floor of the commercial facility collapsed, sending some shoppers to the hospital.

At the Nippon Paper Industries Yatsushiro Plant, officials reported that two people were found with cardiac arrest and nine people remained missing. A chimney collapsed at the plant, with aerial photographs showing the structure broken.

Additional infrastructure damage included power cuts affecting more than 40,000 households according to bbc.com (with Artemis noting approximately 48,000 households without power), damaged roads, a collapsed footbridge, and historical walls tumbling at the 17th-century Kumamoto castle.

Shaking Intensity and Wider Regional Impact

The Japan Meteorological Agency reported shaking reaching the highest Shindo 7 level on the Japanese earthquake scale in some areas. Shindo 6 level shaking was reported in urban areas including the cities of Yatsushiro and Uto, the towns of Mashiki and Misato, and Kumamoto’s Minami Ward, according to Japanese media reports. Shindo 5 level shaking was experienced in other areas of Kumamoto, Nagasaki, Kagoshima, Fukuoka, Saga, and Miyazaki prefectures.

Following the main tremor, more than 60 aftershocks ranging in magnitude from 1 to 4 were recorded by the bbc.com, alongside separate aftershocks measuring M5.6 and M4.9.

Firms including Sony and TSMC have plants in the quake’s area, though Artemis noted no reports of damage to those facilities.

Historical Context in Kumamoto Prefecture

The Kumamoto prefecture has a history of major seismic activity. A 7.3 magnitude quake hit the region in 2016, causing parts of the 400-year-old Kumamoto castle’s turrets and curved walls to collapse. According to Japan public broadcaster NHK, a total of 278 people died in the 2016 earthquakes across Kumamoto and neighbouring Oita prefectures. An earthquake a decade prior near Kumamoto that struck at magnitude 7.0 was estimated to have caused insurance and reinsurance market losses of up to US $4 billion, currency converted at the time.
