Elon Musk Projects Grok Imagine Will Create Historically Accurate The Odyssey

Elon Musk has announced that his AI platform, Grok Imagine, will produce a "full-length movie of The Odyssey" that he claims will be "historically accurate and true to the art of Homer." The SpaceX founder and X owner stated on his social media platform that the project would be completed before the end of the year.

Musk’s announcement was accompanied by a three-minute clip of AI-generated footage depicting a scene between Odysseus and the nymph Calypso, originally shared by another user on X.

Context of the AI Initiative

Grok Imagine, developed by xAI, is a tool integrated with X that allows users to generate short animated videos from text prompts or by animating still images. The system can natively produce synchronized audio, including sound effects, ambient noise, and background music. While current capabilities support video clips of up to 30 seconds, the technology is part of an industry-wide trend where filmmakers are increasingly utilizing generative AI for tasks such as storyboarding, script assistance, concept art, and scene pre-visualization.

Conflict Surrounding Christopher Nolan’s Film

Musk’s pledge to create his own adaptation follows his public criticism of director Christopher Nolan’s recent film, The Odyssey. Released on Friday, the Nolan production stars Matt Damon as Odysseus and Anne Hathaway as Penelope. Musk has repeatedly expressed disapproval of the film’s casting choices, specifically criticizing the inclusion of Black actor Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra, and trans actor Elliot Page as the Greek soldier Sinon.

Musk has described Nolan’s approach as having lost "integrity" and has characterized the film’s casting as part of a "woke" agenda. In response to these criticisms, Nyong’o stated in May that the cast is "representative of the world" and that she does not spend time formulating a defense against such commentary. Nolan has dismissed the pre-release backlash as "irrelevant," noting that such conversations occur before audiences have actually seen the film.

Box Office Performance and Reception

Despite the campaign led by Musk, Nolan’s The Odyssey has achieved significant commercial success. The film recorded a global opening weekend box office of $264.1 million, according to msn.com. In North America, it earned $124.5 million across 3,900 screens, securing an A CinemaScore from audiences. The film currently stands as 2026’s largest live-action opening, representing the highest weekend launch for an R-rated movie in Universal’s history.

The Debate on Historical Accuracy

Musk’s claim regarding the "historical accuracy" of an AI-generated Odyssey has been met with skepticism, as Homer’s work is a piece of fiction written in the 7th or 8th Century BC. Critics have pointed out the inherent difficulty in achieving historical accuracy for a mythological epic.

Nolan has remained critical of the broader integration of AI in cinema, stating that the idea of the technology replacing human creativity is "a nonsense." He further remarked that AI is a technology "successfully adopted by Wall Street and by investors and by tech companies that the public has so thoroughly rejected," as reported by Theguardian.

In addition to his AI project, Musk has indicated interest in other versions of the material, stating on X that he would be willing to provide $100 million to Mel Gibson to direct an adaptation of The Odyssey delivered in Homeric Greek.
