Paramount is moving forward with a sequel to the 1990 racing drama Days of Thunder,
with filmmaker Jonathan Levine currently in negotiations to direct the project. The film is set to see the return of Tom Cruise, who will reprise his role as NASCAR driver Cole Trickle.
According to Variety, the project reunites Cruise with producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who also produced the original film. Will Staples has been tapped to write the screenplay for the sequel. While details regarding the new story remain under wraps, the production marks a significant step in Paramount’s efforts to revisit the legacy of the racing film, which was originally directed by the late Tony Scott.
The Legacy of Days of Thunder
The original Days of Thunder
followed Cole Trickle, a hot-headed rookie stock car driver recruited to a NASCAR team by a retired racing legend, played by Robert Duvall. The film, which also featured performances by Randy Quaid, Cary Elwes, Michael Rooker, and Caroline Williams, served as a spiritual successor to “Top Gun,” trading fighter jets for the speed of the NASCAR circuit.
During the production of the 1990 film, Cruise met Nicole Kidman, to whom he was married for 11 years. While the original movie earned praise for its racing sequences and a score by Hans Zimmer, it faced financial hurdles with a budget that rose to $60 million, ultimately grossing $157.9 million worldwide, according to Deadline. Despite its initial box office performance, the film developed a significant cult following among NASCAR fans and cinephiles.
Levine’s Path to the Driver’s Seat
Jonathan Levine’s involvement in the sequel follows his recent work with Paramount on the upcoming sports drama Mr. Irrelevant.
That film, starring David Corenswet, depicts the true story of John Tuggle, the final player selected in the 1983 NFL Draft by the New York Giants. Levine’s resume includes a diverse array of projects, ranging from “50/50” and “Warm Bodies” to “Long Shot” and The Night Before.
He also directed episodes of the Hulu drama Nine Perfect Strangers,
which starred Kidman.
Paramount’s decision to pursue Levine is viewed as a vote of confidence in his ability to manage high-profile projects, particularly as the studio looks to replicate the massive success of Top Gun: Maverick.
That 2022 legacyquel, also produced by Bruckheimer and starring Cruise, grossed nearly $1.5 billion globally and earned six Academy Award nominations, winning for best sound.
Industry Context and Upcoming Projects
The development of the Days of Thunder
sequel comes as racing films have returned to the spotlight, bolstered by the success of Bruckheimer’s recent project, “F1.” Industry analysts noted that the studio is looking to leverage Cruise’s history with legacy properties to achieve similar results to his previous box office hits.
