Monitor Audio has officially expanded the customization options for its flagship Hyphn loudspeaker, now offering the statement model in more than 200 bespoke finishes. While the new custom options are now available, the company confirmed that the three original finishes—Matte Heritage Green, Matte Black, and Pure Satin White—remain part of the standard lineup. Each custom-finished cabinet is hand-painted and assembled by a specialized team of technicians at the Monitor Audio headquarters in Rayleigh, Essex, in the United Kingdom. Pricing and Market Positioning
The introduction of the expanded finish program comes with a distinct pricing structure. As reported by Whathifi, the standard paint editions of the Hyphn are priced at £70,000, €82,500, or $92,500 per pair. Opting for a custom finish increases the cost to £80,250, €92,500, or $102,500 per pair.
The Hyphn represents the culmination of a multiyear development effort that began as the “Concept 50,” a demonstration piece unveiled at the 2022 High End Munich show to celebrate the company’s 50th anniversary. Following an overwhelmingly positive reception to the concept, Monitor Audio re-engineered the design to meet specific manufacturing, reliability, and performance requirements for a commercial production model.
Technical Architecture and Design
The Hyphn is described by Monitor Audio as one of the most technically ambitious products in its history. The speaker features a unique industrial design consisting of two mineral and acrylic composite towers connected by a central bridge. This bridge houses the mid and treble array, which includes a micro-pleated diaphragm tweeter surrounded by six midrange units.
The bass section is composed of four 8-inch drivers positioned to face each other. To ensure structural integrity, these drivers are secured by inch-thick metal rods and through-bolt fixings that span the width of the cabinet. The cabinet itself is precision-milled to manage complex geometry and provide a rigid platform for the drive units, a process that required extensive research into material properties to ensure the structure could handle the load of the force-cancelling woofers without introducing audible vibration.
Manufacturing Standards
The transition from the Concept 50 prototype to the final Hyphn production model involved significant refinement. Engineers were tasked with solving several technical challenges, including the integration of internal strengthening ribs and bracing, as well as developing a hidden cable routing system for the bass sections.
Monitor Audio maintains that this cabinet design avoids the intermodulation distortion issues often associated with traditional coaxial speaker designs, where the midrange cone typically serves as a waveguide for the tweeter. By combining these acoustic considerations with the new hand-painted, made-to-order finish program, the company aims to offer a product that serves as both a high-performance audio component and a bespoke design element.
