The core of the woman’s 2025 report to police was the claim that the suspect revealed previously undisclosed details about the crime while they lived together.

When asked about the impact of these words, the woman was definitive: Clearly he had killed Annette Mason. He had done that, she said. However, the suspect’s version of events provided a starkly different narrative. He testified that the woman’s claims were absolutely not true and described her as a nutcase.

The suspect maintained that he and the woman were merely friends, stating, She was good to hang around with – a good friend, and claimed he would not have a clue why she would make such accusations.

The brutality of the original crime remains the central tragedy of the case. In November 1989, 15-year-old Annette Mason was killed in a house she shared with friends in Toowoomba, west of Brisbane. Her body was found in her bed.
