NASA Recruits Volunteers for Yearlong Moon and Mars Exploration Analog Simulation

NASA is recruiting four volunteers for the Moon and Mars Exploration Analog (MMEA), a yearlong simulation starting no earlier than August 2027 at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. The program combines two existing habitats to study human health and performance during deep-space missions, including transit, surface operations, and the return journey.

Combining Habitats for an End-to-End Mission

NASA’s upcoming MMEA mission represents a shift in how the agency prepares for the rigors of deep-space travel. By linking these environments, NASA aims to simulate the entire arc of a mission, from the initial spacecraft transit to long-term survival on a planetary surface.

The mission utilizes the Human Exploration Research Analog (HERA), a 650-square-foot facility used by NASA since 2014, to replicate the confined quarters of a spacecraft. Once the simulated “transit” phase concludes, participants will transfer to the Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog (CHAPEA), a 1,700-square-foot habitat designed to model a Martian base. As NASA stated, this integrated approach streamlines research into how astronauts adapt to resource limitations, equipment failures, and communication delays.

Participant Requirements and Selection Process

The agency is seeking four primary participants and two alternates to commit to a 14-month window, which includes pre- and post-mission training.

Beyond academic credentials, the selection process is rigorous. Dietary restrictions are also prohibited. For those who qualify, the experience offers a unique, albeit highly controlled, immersion into the realities of space exploration. While the agency confirmed that participants will be reimbursed, specific compensation details remain broadly defined.

Integrating Immersive Technology with Omni One

A notable addition to the MMEA program is the integration of virtual reality hardware to enhance the realism of surface operations. This technology features an omni-directional treadmill that allows crew members to physically walk, turn, and navigate within a virtual Martian landscape.

This system will support training for critical tasks such as equipment repair, rock sampling, and emergency response during simulated extravehicular activities. By moving beyond stationary controls, researchers hope to gain better data on the physical toll of surface operations.

Contextualizing the Human Research Program

The MMEA is part of NASA’s broader effort to prepare for the Artemis IV mission and future crewed flights to Mars. For instance, the inaugural CHAPEA mission, which challenged four volunteers to survive for 378 days, focused on similar stressors, including the psychological effects of isolation and the management of a 1,700-square-foot habitat.
