Fans immediately took notice, and the link went viral before the franchise removed it from the platform.

A spokesperson for the Heat told ESPN’s Shams Charania that the team’s social media department was preparing for the possibility of James signing with Miami and mistakenly posted the link to the franchise’s channel. Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald reported that the video was a mistake by the Heat's social media department while preparing for the possibility of LeBron picking the Heat. As of Tuesday, Chiang reported there was “no validity” to James going to the Heat.

Despite the clarification, the timing of the error caught the attention of the sports world, as the 41-year-old James is an unrestricted free agent for the first time since signing with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2018. James is entering his 24th season.

Winnipeg Jets and the Viral Parody

The Winnipeg Jets capitalized on the Heat’s error by launching a mock campaign of their own. On Wednesday morning, the NHL team’s official account on X posted: The Winnipeg Jets’s official YouTube channel has LeBron’s introductory press conference scheduled for July 27.

The Jets created a live post to YouTube with the same title, including a tag that suggests the post will go live at 12:23 p.m. local time on July 27. The team also created a thumbnail that pictures James in a Jets jersey with LePress Conference and the message: Note to self: Don't upload this yet! The Jets also tagged NBACentel, an NBA news parody account known for jokingly breaking fake news. Fans in the live chat participated by making comments such as “LeWinnipegJets” and “LeHockey.”

This post is on par with the Jets’ social media strategy, which is known for being unserious. Recently, the team has made posts about a spineless raccoon, the New York Jets’ new uniforms, and meatballs. The Philadelphia Police Department also joined the trend with a mock news conference of their own, and the PGA Tour also participated in the fun.

Free Agency Stakes and Current Odds

The confusion surrounding the Heat’s YouTube channel has brought renewed focus to James’ free agency decision. ESPN’s Shams Charania previously named the Heat as one of three teams—alongside the Cleveland Cavaliers and Philadelphia 76ers—that James had a “focus on” in free agency, with the Golden State Warriors also emerging as a potential landing spot.

ESPN’s Kendrick Perkins noted on “Get Up” that the leak was a significant development. This wasn’t leaked by accident, those things don’t happen under Pat Riley’s watch, Perkins said. “This means that Miami is really in the hunt. LeBron could possibly end up back in South Beach. All of us across the world have become investigators. But this is the first real big clue that we’ve been able to see from an organization that LeBron James has interest in.”

NFL reporter Adam Schefter also said on Monday during an appearance on Philadelphia sports radio station 97.5 The Fanatic that he thinks there is a real chance James ends up back in South Beach, citing a text with a Miami source. Where there’s smoke, there’s fire, Schefter said.
