An upper stage from a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launched in January 2025 is on a collision course to impact the Moon on Wednesday, August 5. Traveling at roughly 8,700 km/h, the abandoned booster will strike near the Einstein crater on the lunar near side, creating a new crater and a visible dust plume.

More than a year after serving as the propulsion unit for a dual lunar mission, a piece of orbital hardware is about to crash onto the lunar surface. The 12-meter-long, 4.5-tonne piece of space hardware was used on January 15, 2025, to propel two separate lunar landers toward the Moon. One of those craft, the Blue Ghost lander developed by Firefly Aerospace, became the first private device to succeed in a complete lunar landing, while a second lander designed by ispace crashed during its attempt.

Following its mission deployment, the Falcon 9 upper stage drifted into an eccentric loop. Independent astronomer Bill Gray, the creator of the Project Pluto software designed to track near-Earth objects and man-made space hardware, first calculated and announced the impending trajectory months ago.

Experts estimate the kinetic energy released during the crash will be equivalent to roughly three tonnes of TNT. This impact is projected to carve out a fresh crater measuring approximately 27 meters in diameter and five meters in depth.

While the flash of light generated by the impact will likely prove too faint for direct viewing from Earth, the resulting debris cloud offers a distinct observational window. USA Today notes that the collision will kick up enough dust to be visible from Earth, more than 400,000 kilometers away for observers equipped with proper telescopes.

Astrophysicist Jonathan McDowell noted that while the current crash is benign, similar uncontrolled trajectories will demand stricter tracking protocols as space agencies move toward establishing permanent bases on the lunar surface and protecting future astronaut crews from unpredictable space debris hazards.
