, according to Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili. The push for a reset follows tensions over Georgia’s creation of a hate-speech combat unit, which the US Embassy criticized as a potential tool for censorship.
The relationship between Tbilisi and Washington is currently attempting to pivot away from a cycle of criticism and friction.
US Embassy criticism of hate-speech mandates
The immediate catalyst for the current diplomatic tension is the Georgian government’s establishment of a unit designed to combat hate speech. The US Embassy in Tbilisi criticized the move, while rights groups and Western partners expressed concerns that the mandate is too vaguely defined.
Members of Georgia’s ruling team have pushed back against these claims. They argue that taking action against hate speech is consistent with European and international practices, dismissing the US concerns as a double standard or political interference.
Botchorishvili’s push for a clean slate
Despite the friction, Botchorishvili claims there have been positive signs

Ramaz Sakvarelidze told Rezonansi that Botchorishvili’s comments are likely an attempt to protect a recent improvement in the tone of bilateral relations. Sakvarelidze suggested that the US Embassy’s criticism of the hate-speech unit was inconsistent with other recent contacts between the two nations.
According to Sakvarelidze, this discrepancy might reflect internal political differences within the US administration. He further argued that starting from a clean sheet
would effectively mean abandoning the previous approach the Biden administration took toward Georgia.
