Spider-Man: Brand New Day
has officially broken the all-time record for the biggest North American opening weekend, pulling in $360 million in ticket sales across the United States and Canada according to apnews.com. The fourth Spider-Man film starring Tom Holland surpassed the previous record held by 2019’s Avengers: Endgame,
which opened with $357 million, as reported by Variety. Sony Pictures initially projected Sunday that the film would bring in an estimated $355 million across 4,487 theaters, but stronger-than-expected Sunday figures pushed the final tally higher.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day Shatters Box Office Records
Tom Rothman, the chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, addressed the milestone in a statement reported by apnews.com, stating, records are made to be broken, but we will take great pride in this one, for as long as we hold it.
Alongside its domestic triumph, the movie launched to a global total of $932 million during its first weekend, marking the second-biggest worldwide debut in history behind only “Avengers: Endgame,” which opened globally at $1.2 billion.
Milestones and Historic Box Office Figures
The latest comic-book adventure from Sony and Marvel Studios, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, set numerous records throughout its opening week. According to Hollywoodreporter, the movie became the fastest film to surpass $500 million in North America, reaching the threshold in seven days to supplant Avengers: Endgame,
which took eight days in 2019. “Brand New Day” also secured the best-ever domestic box office sums for a Monday and a Tuesday, and reached the billion-dollar global mark in six days.
Additional opening records included a $72 million preview haul and a $169.8 million opening day, according to Variety. Forbes notes that the film earned a 90% critic score and a 98% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, alongside an “A” from Cinemascore. The top four biggest debuts in box office history now entirely belong to Marvel Studios productions: Avengers: Endgame,
Spider-Man: Brand New Day,
Spider-Man: No Way Home,
and Avengers: Infinity War.
Context and Companion Releases
The film picks up following the events of “No Way Home,” which concluded with the world forgetting Peter Parker’s identity. The plot features Spider-Man struggling with mutating powers while dealing with the absence of his loved ones, including MJ, played by Zendaya, and best friend Ned, played by Jacob Batalon, neither of whom remember him. The cast also includes Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal, and Mark Ruffalo, under the production of Marvel Studios and Amy Pascal, with a reported production budget of $225 million.
The box office weekend was further amplified by the concurrent theatrical run of Christopher Nolan’s IMAX epic “The Odyssey,” which stars Holland and Zendaya alongside Jon Bernthal. According to Forbes, “The Odyssey” brought in an estimated $51 million in its third weekend to secure second place at the box office. The combined strength of Spider-Man: Brand New Day
and “The Odyssey” drove over $425 million in domestic ticket sales, creating the single highest-grossing weekend in domestic theater history.
