The milestone marks a pivotal advancement for Project Sunrise, bringing ultra-long-haul commercial service closer to reality.
Commercial aviation reached a new threshold of endurance when an ultra-long-range widebody touched down at the aircraft manufacturer’s factory in south-west France. The journey spanned 23,075 kilometers without a single stopover, connecting the southern hemisphere directly to Europe and drawing millions of online spectators along the way.
The 24-Hour Marathon Route From Melbourne to Toulouse
The developmental flight departed from Melbourne and took an expansive northerly path across the Pacific Ocean, traversing the United States and Canada before crossing the Atlantic south of Greenland and passing over the United Kingdom before final descent. According to regional reporting detailing the flight path, the aircraft crossed over Islay, the Kintyre Peninsula, Turnberry in Ayrshire, Galloway Forest Park, and Kirkcudbright in Dumfries and Galloway before continuing toward Toulouse.

Airbus selected this specific northern Atlantic trajectory to bypass established airline tracks that might not reflect real-time updates by takeoff, thereby avoiding potential Air Traffic Control complications and mis-matching flight plans. The aircraft involved was the purpose-built A350-1000ULR, featuring a specially designed rear center fuel tank with a capacity of 20,900 liters. This additional fuel storage enabled the jet to cover a distance of 12,460 nautical miles during the demanding return leg, following an earlier outward test flight from Toulouse to Melbourne via the Indian Ocean that took just over 19 hours.

The trial run serves as a cornerstone for Project Sunrise, an initiative by Qantas designed to eliminate stopovers and reshape long-haul travel between Australia and major global hubs. The airline has ordered 12 modified A350-1000ULR aircraft configured with 238 passenger seats.
Regular commercial operations are slated to begin with daily nonstop journeys between Sydney and London by October 2027, with direct routes to New York following shortly after.
