UK Maritime Trade Operations announced that heavily armed people seized a merchant ship near the town of Eyl off the coast of Somalia.
It cited military authorities as a source of information, announcing the opening of an investigation. This incident came nearly a decade after pirates caused chaos in international shipping.
Meanwhile, the European Union Naval Force reported that a commercial ship flying the Maltese flag was hijacked in the nearby Arabian Sea last week and transported to the same area off the coast of Somalia.
The cargo tanker Rowen had 18 crew members on board when it was hijacked near Socotra Island, about 240 kilometers off Somalia.
The force said that a crew member was evacuated to an Indian Navy ship to receive medical care. Suspicions are also swirling around Somali pirates in this kidnapping, despite the naval force’s statement that the kidnappers are unknown and their demands are unknown.
