Arsenal Explore Shock Move for Real Madrid Winger Vinícius Júnior

Arsenal are exploring a shock transfer move to sign Real Madrid winger Vinícius Júnior, according to Theguardian. The 26-year-old Brazil international has entered the final year of his contract at the Bernabéu, placing his future in doubt and prompting interest from the Premier League champions as manager Mikel Arteta seeks a marquee signing.

Arsenal Explore Shock Transfer Move for Vinícius Júnior

According to The New York Times, the interest is at an early stage and has approval at all levels within Arsenal, though there have been no club-to-club talks yet. Alongside Vinícius, The Mirror reported that Arsenal’s wide forward shortlist includes Atlético Madrid’s Julián Álvarez, RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande, and Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola.

Contract Situation and Real Madrid’s Stance

Vinícius Júnior has spent eight seasons at Real Madrid after joining from Flamengo in 2018, making 375 total appearances with 128 goals and 100 assists. However, negotiations over a contract renewal have seen no breakthrough, with Madrid reportedly unable to accept reported salary demands of $34.6 million (€30 million) per season, as noted by SI.

Because Vinícius has only 12 months remaining on his terms, AOL reported that Real Madrid could look to cash in on the player rather than risk losing him for free in 2027. Furthermore, if he starts the season as a Real Madrid player, he would be due a significant loyalty bonus after eight years in Spain.

Managerial Uncertainty and Recent Form

Uncertainty has also grown following José Mourinho’s return to Real Madrid on a three-year deal. Mourinho was previously criticized for comments made after Vinícius accused Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni of racially abusing him during a Champions League tie in February, where Mourinho stated that something happens, always in matches featuring the Brazilian. Prestianni was later banned for six matches after admitting to using homophobic language.

Despite these tensions, Sky Sports noted that the player and head coach have been in touch and were ready to start the campaign with a clean slate. Vinícius is fresh off scoring 22 goals across all competitions for Real Madrid last season—helping them finish second in La Liga, eight points behind Barcelona—and netting four goals in five games for Brazil at the World Cup before their round-of-16 exit against Norway.

Arsenal’s Summer Transfer Context

Arsenal’s pursuit of attacking reinforcements follows the departure of Leandro Trossard to Besiktas for £17m earlier in the summer. The Gunners bolstered their squad by signing Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge for £34m, alongside the permanent acquisition of Piero Hincapié and the free signing of goalkeeper Illan Meslier.

Arsenal had also targeted Morgan Rogers, but refused to pay more than £80m for the England international, who ultimately joined Chelsea in a British record £117m deal. In addition to wide forward options, Arsenal remain keen on Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimarães.
