Saudi Coalition Strikes Houthi Targets in Yemen Following Red Sea Tanker Attacks
Saudi Arabia’s coalition forces struck Houthi militia in Yemen on Saturday. The military action followed claims by the Iran-backed group that it had attacked two Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea earlier in the week. Air defense systems in Saudi Arabia intercepted two ballistic missiles from Yemen targeting oil refineries in Yanbu, with Greek military personnel operating the defense systems according to security sources.
Major General Turki Al-Malki, spokesperson for the Saudi-led Coalition to Restore Legitimacy in Yemen, released a statement regarding the operation.
Al-Malki also characterized the Houthi maritime embargo and tanker targeting as a reckless and cowardly act by targeting commercial vessels in the Red Sea.
Strait of Hormuz Blockade Claims and Tanker Incidents
Maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has slowed sharply amid ongoing hostilities. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claimed on Saturday (July 18, 2026) that two oil tankers transiting through the Strait of Hormuz hit mines and exploded.
The Guards issued warnings to sailors To protect their capital and, more importantly, their lives, the sailors should not be deceived and enter the minefield.
U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) disputed the account, stating on X that Like most IRGC claims, this is false.
Separately, Rear Admiral Alireza Tangsiri, commander of the naval arm of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), stated that two ships that ignored warnings were struck while attempting to cross the strait on Wednesday. Despite these restrictions, Iran allowed Indian-flagged vessels to pass safely following discussions between Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi.
U.S. and International Diplomatic Stances Amid Escalation
U.S. President Donald Trump addressed the wider conflict on Thursday following Houthi strikes on Saudi tankers, stating that If they do this again, the U.S. will hold Iran responsible, in that the Houthis are a Surrogate and/or Proxy of Iran, and major military punishment will be inflicted upon Iran and, of course, the Houthis, themselves.
Discussing potential strategies with reporters, Trump noted, There’s a military exit where we just keep going just the way we are, and we can even make it a heavier dose, and it’s knocking out everything they have. Or there’s a smarter strategy that you make a deal.
Meanwhile, Iranian health ministry spokesperson Hossein Kermanpour stated on X that Iran had a peaceful night
following a pause in overnight strikes.
Simultaneously, diplomatic efforts continue as Pakistan seeks to restart stalled peace talks between Washington and Tehran, according to Reuters reports citing Pakistani sources.
