At least 33 people, most of them children, were killed in a landslide in northwestern Colombia, according to what the country’s vice president announced.

Francia Marquez wrote on the X platform, “I deeply regret the death of 33 people in this tragedy, most of them children, according to initial reports from the scene.”
Local authorities previously reported that at least 23 people were killed in the slide.
The Chocó region, which overlooks the Pacific Ocean and includes a vast tropical forest, has been subjected to heavy rainfall during the past 24 hours.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro assured that “all possible assistance to Chocó in this terrible tragedy” will be provided.
The police reported that they were working closely with “various emergency and rescue agencies on the road between Medellin and Quibdo.”
Pictures posted on social media and television channels showed cars destroyed by mud and landslides.
Search teams, including firefighters, soldiers and local residents, struggled through deep mud and debris in the hope of finding survivors, while relatives stood nearby, some crying hard, others hugging each other. Rescuers used stretchers to transport the bodies.
