The father of a 19-year-old Canadian woman found dead near a shipwreck on Queensland’s K’gari (Fraser Island) says his family is devastated by the tragedy. Piper James was on what was described as a “holiday of a lifetime” when she went missing after an early morning swim on Monday.
Piper James Found Near Dingo Pack
James’ body was discovered on the shoreline near the SS Maheno shipwreck, surrounded by approximately 10 dingoes. Authorities have not yet confirmed the cause of death, which will be determined by a post-mortem examination scheduled for Wednesday.
“Our hearts are shattered as we share the tragic loss of our beautiful daughter, Piper,” Todd James, her father, said in a social media tribute. “We will always remember her infectious laugh and her kind spirit. I admired her strength and determination to go after her dreams.”
James had been living and working at a backpackers on K’gari with a friend from Canada for about six weeks. Her father had given her his blessing for the trip, recalling a conversation where she said, “Because I’m 18, and you can’t stop me!”
Family members described James as a joyful and courageous person. Grandmother Penny Vanalstine Marshall said she was a “beacon of strength” and would be “cherished forever.”
Rangers have increased patrols across the island following the incident, which occurred weeks after warnings about aggressive dingo behavior in the area. Reports included wild dogs ripping tents, approaching campers, and stealing belongings.
Queensland Premier David Crisafulli on Wednesday ruled out a tourist ban on the island, stating that authorities are awaiting the autopsy results. He described the loss of the young woman as “really troubling.”
A warning regarding “heightened dingo activity” remains in place on K’gari through January 31.
Crisafulli emphasized the importance of respecting the tragedy and focusing on determining the cause of death. “We’re determined to get to the bottom of the cause, and then we respond,” he said. “But… during the course of the debate, let’s not lose sight that a young woman has lost her life.”
