Narrative Focus and Visual Aesthetic
To achieve its distinct look, the production team conducted field research at locations including Shanxi’s Yongle Palace, Sichuan’s Qingcheng Mountain, and Hunan’s Zhangjiajie. The visual design integrates traditional Chinese aesthetics with modern animation techniques.
Production Origins in Chengdu
The film’s creation is tied to the Chengdu High-tech Zone, a hub for digital cultural and creative industries that previously hosted the development of the Ne Zha film series and the Honor of Kings video game. The region currently hosts over 6,000 enterprises within the sector. According to Ying Xujun, president of Oriental DreamWorks and the film’s executive producer, the project seeks to bridge cultural gaps through universal themes of courage and integrity.
As the film prepares for its overseas debut, the core of its appeal remains the blend of 市井生活气息
(the atmosphere of everyday life) with the high-stakes action of the fantasy genre. By framing the mythological figures as ordinary people, the creators aim to ensure that the human elements of the story resonate with international audiences regardless of language barriers.
