Christopher Nolan Film Boosts Homer Odyssey Print Sales 1400%

Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster film adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic has sparked a massive global surge in print and digital book sales, driving overall UK poetry sales toward a record-breaking year. According to data from market researchers NielsenIQ cited by Theguardian, UK poetry sales surpassed £8 million during the first 30 weeks of the year, marking a 13.3% increase compared to the same period in 2025.

The category is projected to exceed £15 million in annual sales for the first time since accurate records began, and could reach £17 million if the current momentum continues through the autumn. Homer’s 2,700-year-old epic poem has accounted for a significant share of this growth, bringing the classic work to an entirely new audience. UK print sales of The Odyssey surged by 1,400% in the four weeks leading up to 25 July compared with the same period in 2025, following the film’s release in mid-July.

The ripple effects of the film’s success are extending far beyond UK print outlets:

  • United States: Print sales across all editions of The Odyssey are up 76% so far this year, according to Circana BookScan figures cited by Theguardian.
  • Israel: Magnes Press reported that five times as many copies of the Hebrew translation of the epic were sold through its website in July compared to the previous month, leading to a concurrent rise in sales of The Iliad, according to Ynetnews.
  • France: Daily Spotify listening hours for The Odyssey increased by more than 752% in mid-July compared with the previous month.
  • Audiobooks: Stephen Fry’s reading entered Spotify’s UK audiobook top 10, while Ian McKellen’s narration appeared on the equivalent US chart.

Spike in Language Interest and Critical Reception

The renewed public fascination with antiquity has also translated into a massive spike in educational curiosity. Google Trends data cited by Tribune indicates that searches for “learn Greek” jumped by 5,000% over a fortnight. Preply language trends expert Madeline Enos noted that while Ancient Greek allows readers to engage with Homer’s original text, Modern Greek connects people with contemporary culture.

Despite driving widespread readership, the film has faced sharp pushback from some academic figures. Classicist Emily Wilson published a critical review in the London Review of Books, writing that the movie suffered from a usual combination of grandiosity and superficiality and asserting that the writing is abysmal.

However, Wilson also acknowledged the broader cultural benefits of the project. Speaking to The Times in coverage highlighted by Tribune, Wilson stated: The release of The Odyssey is still an event to celebrate because it is bringing audiences back to cinemas, adding, Nolan is doing his best to get the general public reading again, and I am grateful.
