The Servicio Nacional de Capacitación y Empleo (Sence) in Chile has launched 10 free online mining courses, including AI-focused programs, with enrollment open until September 30, 2026, for individuals aged 18+ with a Chilean ID.

The Servicio Nacional de Capacitación y Empleo (Sence) in Chile has expanded its free online training offerings, adding 10 courses focused on mining and artificial intelligence (AI), with enrollment open until September 30, 2026. The initiative, part of a public-private partnership with Microsoft, aims to enhance employability in the mining sector by providing flexible, accessible education. Courses range from 2 to 16 hours, covering topics like mine planning, geology, and AI applications, and are available to individuals aged 18+ with a valid Chilean ID (RUT) and ClaveÚnica.

Free Mining Courses Expand Access to Digital and Technical Skills

Sence’s 10 free courses include both traditional mining education and AI-driven modules, reflecting the sector’s evolving demands. The catalog features programs like Proyecto Minero Subterráneo (4 hours) and Cierre de Faenas Mineras (4 hours), which focus on AI ethics, automation, and data-driven decision-making. These courses are part of a broader collaboration with Microsoft, which has contributed six AI-focused programs, including IA para la Vida y el Trabajo and ExperiencIA, a 2-hour course on leveraging AI for personal and professional development.

José Luis Osorio, Regional Mining Minister in Aysén stated that each course provides tools that can be useful for those seeking to establish themselves in mining or continue advancing their careers.

Eligibility, Deadlines, and Enrollment Process

To enroll, participants must be at least 18 years old, possess a valid Chilean RUT, and have an active ClaveÚnica. The process involves visiting sence.cl, navigating to Busca tu curso, selecting “Minería” as the area of interest, and following the enrollment steps. A downloadable certificate is issued upon completion.

The program’s flexibility and lack of prerequisites make it accessible to a wide audience, including those without prior mining experience.

Regional Impact and Broader Workforce Development

The initiative has particular significance for regions like Aysén, where the Seremi de Minería actively promotes the courses to local residents. José Luis Osorio, Regional Mining Minister in Aysén stated that we want when new opportunities in mining open up, our people to be prepared to take advantage of them. Osorio highlighted the program’s role in aligning regional workforce needs with industry demands. The courses also address the growing need for digital literacy, with AI training designed to equip workers for future technological shifts.

While the Sence-Microsoft collaboration focuses on AI, other partnerships, such as BHP’s “Nuevos Tesoros” program in Antofagasta, offer complementary technical training in mining trades. However, the Sence initiative stands out for its broad accessibility and emphasis on digital skills, which are increasingly critical in modern mining operations.

For learners, the courses represent a low-barrier entry into a sector that remains vital to Chile’s economy. Sence’s approach—combining traditional mining knowledge with AI training—positions it as a model for integrating technological advancement with workforce development.

The program’s success hinges on continued outreach and adaptability. As the mining industry evolves, Sence and its partners must ensure that course content remains aligned with emerging trends, such as automation and sustainability. For now, the 10 free courses offer a tangible pathway for individuals to enhance their skills and contribute to Chile’s economic growth.
