A new draft agreement from the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Dubai calls for countries to “shift away from the use of all fossil fuels to enable the world to achieve carbon neutrality in 2050,” according to the latest compromise that the UAE will seek to be approved by consensus on Wednesday.

The text, which aspires to become the first decision issued by the Conference of the Parties to address the fate of all types of fossil fuels, including oil, gas and coal, does not include the phrase “dispensing” with these fuels, which was demanded by the most ambitious countries and rejected by the oil-producing countries, led by Saudi Arabia.
Also, the draft calls for accelerating the energy transition starting from the current “crucial” decade.
In the item that was one of the focuses of the negotiations, the text under discussion proposes to recognize “the need for a strong, rapid and sustainable reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, in line with 1.5°C pathways, and calls on parties to contribute to the following global efforts,” including List includes 8 types of actions.
The path that should capture the attention of the negotiators stipulates “the transition from the use of fossil fuels in energy systems, in a fair, orderly and equitable manner, by accelerating action in this crucial decade to achieve carbon neutrality in 2050 in line with what science recommends.”
Among other important paragraphs, one of them includes the goal of tripling renewable energy by 2030, and the development of nuclear energy, “low-carbon” hydrogen, and carbon capture technology, which is still immature but favored by oil-producing countries.
