The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) is supporting the Cape Town Minstrel Carnival Association in its opposition to planned changes to the city’s 2026 Tweede Nuwe Jaar Parade.
Tweede Nuwe Jaar Parade Route Changes Face Opposition
The EFF states that the City of Cape Town and the Kaapse Klopse Karnival Association altered the parade route without consulting community members. The revised route will no longer proceed through the city centre, from District Six to Bo-Kaap.
Instead, the parade is scheduled to begin at lower Chiappini Street, travel along Somerset Road, and conclude at the DHL Stadium.
According to the EFF, rerouting the parade severs its historical connection to locations significant to the history of slavery, forced removals, and resistance.
The party has also voiced criticism regarding ticket prices, which reportedly range from R60 to R100, arguing that the cost, combined with transportation expenses, will prevent many community members from participating in the tradition that has been maintained for over a century.
